Beyond the Movies: Let’s Talk Concert Lighting

Here at RatPac Dimmers we know lighting, and we mean every type of lighting that you can think of. We know that the way you approach film lighting differs from stage lighting, and the way you light a theatre production will differ still from the way you light a concert and so on and so forth. Each lighting technique is unique, but there is one thing that they all have in common: Dimmers; and silent wireless dimmers, like those we sell and rent here at RatPac, offer distinct advantages in each and every lighting situation.

"lighting"

So let’s talk concert lighting… The main point of concert lighting is to draw people’s eyes to the band and keep them there. The specifics of the lighting design will of course vary depending on the band performing—the way you light a popstar, for example, will be different than the way you light a rock band. But there are two pretty standard guidelines to keep in mind when it comes to concert lighting:

  • It’s all about the backlighting— Emphasized backlighting can accomplish so much; flashing backlights can double as the set, backlighting can make great graphic patterns in hazy air, not to mention all the colorful, dynamic possibilities backlighting offers.
  • Big and showy is the name of the game—Concert lighting should be big and vibrant and dynamic. It should also take its shape directly from the music. The ideal candidate for a concert lighting position has an eye for detail, enjoys a spectacle and has at least a basic understanding of music and timing.

Over 20 years’ experience in the lighting industry makes RatPac Dimmers a name you can trust. You’ll have a plethora of options to choose from so you’ll be sure to find the perfect dimmer packs for all your lighting needs.

Let RatPac Dimmers Help you Kiss Those January Blues Goodbye

I know that here at RatPac we offer dimmer sales and rentals, so some of you may be confused by the following blog that may seem like a tangent at first. But keep reading. I promise this little rant has a point…

January is coming to an end and it really has me feeling those January Blues. You know the ones I’m talking about—the joyous holiday festivities are over and the harsh reality of everyday life is setting in again, causing the hope and promise of the New Year to seem like a complete and utter lie! Ok I may be being a bit over-dramatic here, but I swear the January Blues are a real thing. Look it up. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Anyway, rather than falling into a deep spiral of depression, I decided I was going to counteract the January Blues with a mind-distracting exercise. So I started thinking about all the wonderful things that are blue"RatPac dimmers": The sky is blue; sapphires are blue; the ocean is blue; blueberries are quite tasty; the moon can be blue; ooo come to think of it, Blue Moon is a delicious beer… You get the picture. Finally, I came to blue lighting in movies. When used correctly, blue lighting can be awesome!

If you’re a Sci-Fi fan—or you frequently work on Sci-Fi movies—then you will definitely know what I’m talking about. Unnaturally blue lighting is often a signature of Science Fiction films. Blue lighting is also commonly used in horror films to set the suspenseful mood. Blue is also the perfect color to contrast with another lighting option, especially orange.

Whatever color lighting you choose, whatever mood you’re trying to set, you’ll definitely be in need of dimmer packs for filming and at  we have exactly what you need! Give us a call today and get ready to kiss those January Blues goodbye as you light your set with ease.
